Venue: Selangor

6th Visitation

Soo Chen Kang is the main beneficiary of the 6th [16th Navigators Visitation], which will take place on 30th September 2012 (Sunday). Soo is a poor and single old man, and has been living alone in a dilapidated house in Ulu Selangor since many years ago. The broken wooden house was give to him by his parents. However, he had lost the document that shows proof of ownership of the land. Hence, the land there is now listed as an illegal housing area. There is no electricity and water supply to his house.

Soo was once a member of the police volunteer team. However, he still carries a red identity card today. He is still trying hard to apply for a Malaysian identity card. About two months ago, he was very fortunate to get the RM3000 subsidy from the government. All of his siblings had shifted to Klang many years ago. They seldom visit him since then. They will only send some items to him during Chinese New Year. Soo has no refrigerator at home, so sometimes he has no choice but to eat the rotten food. Once in a while, his kind neighbours will donate some food for him. However, Soo is a very independent and disciplined old man. To survive, he grows vegetables and long beans so that he can cook them as his daily food. He also sells the vegetables to earn some money for a living.

Since Soo’s house has no water nor electricity supply, he collects the rain water with various steel pails and plates by placing them outside his house. The living environment is very harsh and dirty. Many of the containers are full of mosquitoes. Soo designed his own “homemade filter” so that he can drive away the rain water after that. There is an old coconut tree at the backyard, so Soo occasionally harvests the coconuts and drink its water. Since he has no toilet in his house, Soo takes his bath at the lake near his house everyday.

Soo’s wooden house is overgrown with weeds, and from time to time there will be snakes living among the grass. Two years ago, he was bitten by a snake. The residents in the same village noticed the incident soon after that and sent him to the hospital immediately. Fortunately, he recovered after that. The wooden house that Soo is living in is badly damaged and about to collapse. He hopes that Yayasan Nanyang Press can help raise funds to provide him a simple and basic accommodation.

Yayasan wanted to sponsor the repairing works to enable Soo to live under a safe and stable roof. However, the pillars of Soo’s wooden house are too old and no longer strong enough to handle any repair works. The constructor claimed that any repair works on the house might cause the whole house to collapse. Hence, Yayasan was considering rebuilding a new house for Soo, but since his house is situated on an illegal land, the government refused to allow Yayasan to proceed with the construction. After further discussions with the head of the village and the government, Yayasan decided to buy a container (which was often used as offices or stores by companies) to let Soo use it as a house. The container will come with a toilet, lights, ceiling fan, bed and other basic furniture.

The 6th [16 Navigators Visitation] will take place at 9:30 am on 30 September 2012 (Sunday) in Ulu Selangor. The [5 Hearts] from China Press, cruise teams from ASTRO, teachers from Agape Couselling Centre, and staff of Tai Thong Restaurant, Jusper, Julies’s, Super Ajinomoto and many other sponsors will be joining this meaningful charitable event. The team will work together to create a better environment for Soo. Apart from that, the team will also offer free food and games to all the villagers there.
