Date of visitation
Time 时间: 9am – 3pm
(Soo)
Age
Address 地址: Pelabuhan Klang

Soo (79 years old), Lau (64 years old) and their son, Siong (21 years old) are living in a house that may appear as a hardware wooden store to outsiders. It was built out of wood and zinc plates. The land their house was built on initially belonged to Soo’s ancestor but the ownership had been transferred to his brother.

Although the family is staying under such poor living conditions, Soo has never given up. He is always striving to use his creativity and talent to enhance their living environment by recycling items that had been discarded by others.

According to Soo, his mother passed away when he was two years old. He has only one sibling. His father then married his stepmother, who gave birth to five children. The stepmother only took good care of her own children.

Soo had worked as a tailor but his salary was maintained at RM1,200 every month despite having served the same company for 27 years. He had no choice but to resign 10 years ago to look for other alternative means of income.

Since he lost his job, he started to use his talent and creativity to modify and create DIY products out of recyclable items so that he can sell them for a living. He built a cupboard to classify discarded items and use them in his future creations. Soo manages to collect approximately RM 600 to RM 1,000 per month through selling recycled items.

Due to the nature of his job, his house is filled with all kinds of waste and garbage. Such an unhealthy living environment encourages mosquito breeding. There are also a lot of stray cats that come and go, which further contributes to the filthiness of their home.

To be a little more frugal, Soo gathered some water pipes and installed them on the roof, connecting them to buckets to collect rainwater to be used for laundry, dishes and the toilet. Although life is hard, he still relies on his own strength to support his family.

Soo’s wife, Lau, is a housewife. Since the couple did not have a child, they decided to adopt a 7-day old baby, Siong, when they heard that a baby had been abandoned by his parents. They have no clues about the child’s biological parents or relatives. When Siong was 13 years old, he was diagnosed with bone cancer, which gradually spread to his shoulders, feet, and knees, and then infected his lungs after he underwent his first surgery at the age of 14. Hence, Siong was sent for several surgeries and chemo-therapies after that. Doctors had told Soo that there was no more hope for his son’s recovery.

Siong’s health condition was made known to the charity organisation, “Make A Wish”, which is an NGO motivated to turn the wishes of critically ill children into reality. Siong was given a chance to make his wish come true through “Make A Wish” and received a computer that he had longed desired. Siong eventually recovered in 2011 and started work as a salesman with a basic salary of RM1,000.

Unfortunately, good times never last. Siong experienced inflammation after undergoing chemotherapy early this year. He became unable to work after undergoing surgery in March 2014. Still, Siong never gave up on his future despite his obstacles. He had registered to re-sit for the SPM examination this year. He hopes to pass all his SPM subjects and proceed for further studies in IT.

The family’s cost of living is very low. They are living with relatively simple meals with RM500/month and electricity RM80-RM150/month, while the water bill only costs them a few ringgit. The local mayor also helped them to apply to MyKasih, which allows them to receive minor subsidy payments.

Currently, the house is in a poor condition as its broken rooftop had caused leakage. Its cracked cement floor had also created a small pothole, posing mobility problems.

The cost of repairing and re-structuring the house will cost about RM36,000. Yayasan Nanyang Press understands that a good living environment is very important not only for the family’s physical and mental health, but to also encourage aspiration. Therefore, Yayasan Nanyang Press decided to repair their house through its “16 Navigators” programme.

Thus, the 2nd Visitation of the [16 Navigators ii] will be held at 9:30 am on 26 October 2014 (Sunday), in collaboration with China Press, ASTRO, Agape Counselling Centre, BaoBei Reading Wonderland, and many other sponsors. The Black Team of “16 Navigators” volunteers will be responsible for repairing and cleaning Soo’s house as well as giving him daily necessities.

Moreover, [16 Navigators] and counsellors from Agape Counselling Malaysia will organise various activities for the neighbourhood so as to enhance the relationships between them. There will be different stalls set up in the neighbourhood such as the [16 Navigators Mobile Clinic] led by Dr Kris See (16 Navigators Mobile Clinic Advisor) together with a team of 20 medical volunteers. The free mobile clinic is ready to provide the following services:
• Body mass index (BMI) measurement
• Blood pressure measurement
• Blood sugar level test
• Medical consultation and treatment by qualified medical doctors
• Medicine prescription
• De-worming children
• Identify and assist non-apparent emergency cases
• Medical-related social support and case management
• Referrals to hospitals or other medical and social resources
• Counselling on health and hygiene
